Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder marked by interruptions and pauses in breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by obstructions in the airway, such as the tongue rolling back in the throat or collapsed tissues in the airway. Untreated sleep apnea can contribute to several serious health conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and liver problems.

Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a sleep physician. We recommend that you talk to your orthodontist, as well as your doctor, if you suffer from the symptoms of sleep apnea. Common signs of sleep apnea include:

  • Extreme drowsiness during the day
  • Personality changes and irritability
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Snoring
  • Awakening with a very dry or sore throat
  • Frequent morning headaches

Sleep apnea treatment may depend on the severity of the condition. If you suffer from mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, our orthodontist may recommend an oral appliance. The oral appliance works to treat obstructive sleep apnea by fitting over your teeth and keeping your airway open while you sleep. It can work by preventing the tongue from blocking the air passage or by holding your jaw in a position that prevents airway blockages during sleep. Propel® technology reduces the length of your orthodontic treatment by using cutting-edge tools and procedures that are designed to shift your teeth into their correct positions at an accelerated yet comfortable rate. The innovative devices used in your treatment process stimulate bone remodeling, helping your teeth to move faster and more predictably into the proper position. Propel is oftentimes used in conjunction with standard orthodontic treatments, such as braces or Invisalign®, to increase the speed of tooth movement by up to 50%.

Propel is comfortable and minimally invasive. When you receive this treatment at Quest Orthodontics, our orthodontist will create tiny perforations that will assist in speeding up and stimulating bone production, thus making your orthodontic treatment more efficient. While you may need a local anesthetic during your treatment, there should be minimal discomfort, and it can easily be minimized with mild pain relievers or topical gels.

If you would like to reduce your treatment time with braces, AcceleDent® might be just what you need. AcceleDent is a state-of-the-art device you can use to shorten your treatment period and gain your beautiful, straight smile in less time.
